A man who was dumbfounded by the price of a pack of potato chips in central London sparked a transatlantic controversy over the price of snacks. 

Alexander Jamal explained in a Facebook post that he found the famous American potato chip Cheetos at Leicester Square underground station for as much as £6.99.

Many replies claimed to have found the exact same snacks online for only £4, including import costs.

Some reviewers even claimed that they found potato chips for only £1.40 in their local store, while reviewers from the United States stated that they could buy a pack and ship it at a lower price.

Alexander vented on the price of snacks sold at Leicester Square Underground Station on the Facebook group S*** London 

American reviewers were shocked by the price and stated that they could easily buy a pack and send them to the UK for less than £7

Alexander shared a photo showing three big bags of 225g Flaming Hot Cheetos.

The wrapping paper is orange with the familiar cheetah mascot on the front.

The label on the shelf shows that the potato chips are priced at 6.99 pounds per pack, which is jaw-dropping.  

Alexander was frightened and wrote: "7 pound potato chips! What the hell is going on? Leicester square tube"  

This post was quickly shared hundreds of times, and nearly 200 comments from social media users were shocked to see the price of this snack.

One person wrote: "As an American, I can say that they are not worth it."

Another said: "Isn't this crazy... My son noticed that our non-business license in Essex sold exactly the same thing for £2" 

"The place where I live is 1.40 pounds. Who wants them to pay five cents, including postage?" the third person joked. 

Another added: “We went to a newsstand on Canon Street and wanted to buy 20 Marlboros for 20 pounds. We laughed and went out.

This is not the first particularly expensive product recently discovered near London.

O2 Arena was sold out, selling 500 ml bottled water for 3.50 pounds and a 500 ml bottle of Coca-Cola for 4.40 pounds.

Due to the supply crisis, Walkers potato chips are in high demand, and some eBay users have tried to sell these snacks for nearly £7 per pack.
